Heartening Meals
Bikur Cholim services many different people in many places and for many reasons.
One young Toronto family had to undergo important surgery for their son who was born with severe disabilities. Bikur Cholim stepped in and provided many rides to the patient and his family whilst their little boy was going through extended rehab. A young volunteer brought fresh food daily and sat with the little boy during mealtimes. Due to the financial stressors, both parents had to continue working during the time of the surgery and recovery and when they went to visit their son, they had a hot meal waiting for them. This was nourishing for their body, their soul and spirit.
The nurses of the ward commented that they had never seen such devotion and consistency from an outside source!
When the patient was sent home, Bikur Cholim continued sending food until the family was able to cope on their own. The extended family was so appreciative of the food and service that they are now keeping kosher.
Their involvement with Bikur Cholim enhanced their sense of community and belonging. Thank G-d, their little boy is recovering and doing very well in his school and at home.
Dear Bikur Cholim,
We would very much like to express our gratitude and appreciation of the beautiful meals being sent to my father everyday. We can't begin to tell you what an amazing effect your meals have had on his recovery. First and foremost, the food is delicious and has helped my Dad regain the appetite he had lost during his long stay at the hospital. Secondly, the beautiful way the meals are packaged makes my Dad feel like a mentsch.
You should continue to make such a great Kiddush Hashem.
Thank you again,
The Cohen Family
Dear Friends at Bikur Cholim,
Thanks so much for the wonderful meals that you sent me when i was in the hospital and to the meals you sent to my family as well. It was a tremendous help that with all the other things on our minds and shoulders, we did not have to worry about food. And oh what food it was!!!! The presentation was so fabulous that if we had unwrapped and opened it to find bread and water, I'm sure it would have been delicious. Everything was thought of and even double wrapped to adhere to halacha. It was obvious to the amount of thought, time and effort that was involved.
Further, thank you so much to all the volunteers for the rides to and from the hospital and for the use of the Bikur Cholim apartment.
Once again thanks so much,
Yaakov Goldberg and Family
While visiting people in the hospital, a volunteer came upon the family of an ill man who was very unresponsive. While talking to the family, the volunteer noticed their name and commented that they may be related because she too had relatives with their same uncommon Jewish name. The patient then started crying. As the volunteer left the room she was stopped by the son, he commented that this was the first time his father had ever cried!
They did some investigative work and true enough they were related ! The patient was so overjoyed at having met a living relative that it triggered a new will to get better. The patient and his family now have a special relationship with the volunteer.
