About Us

Illness is always a crisis. Throughout Jewish History, our people have always been there for each other. Organized communal effort was instituted long ago, and free loans, assistance to the sick and needy and many other charitable undertakings have always been part of Jewish life.

This tradition proudly continues in Toronto. Bikur Cholim, literally visiting the sick, encompasses a broad spectrum. We are involved in providing resources to people in very diverse situations; including homebound elderly who need o be taken to appointments, overburdened mothers who need home-care assistance and patients in convalescent facilities who need kosher food and a cheerful smile. We also maintain a strong presence in hospitals where there are large Jewish populations.

We work in conjunction with the major Jewish assistance organizations whose clients are often referred to us. We disburse modest funds to many who have no other place to turn. Over 300 volunteers are involved in every aspect of serving nearly 1000 local clients as well as the countless families from abroad who come to Toronto for treatment.

Bikur Cholim Toronto has evolved with the times and is addressing many relevant and current crisis issues that have cropped up since it has been established over forty years ago.

Bikur Cholim has been fortunate in accessing a modest allocation of funding through the Conference of Jewish Material Claims against Germany. It is with this funding that we have been able to provide Holocaust survivors of the community with caregivers, housekeepers, transportation needs and special meals.

Often these senior members of the community have very few other resources available and depend on Bikur Cholim for support to maintain an independent lifestyle, with dignity and grace.
